Stamford Public Schools Honored Statewide For TechCycle.org Program
District Now A Contender For National Award
Contact: Dr. Anthony L. Mazzullo, Superintendent of Schools (203) 977-4543
(Stamford, Connecticut); January 13, 2003 The Stamford Public Schools’ TechCycle.org Program has won a Civic Star Award from the American Association of School Administrators and Sodexho School Services. The award honors the school district for having the best community partnership promoting academic achievement in Connecticut. The Stamford Public Schools is now vying with school districts from across the country for the top honor, known as the National Civic Star Award, to be given out next month in New Orleans.
TechCycle.org is a computer distribution program that gives free, Pentium computers to the district’s approximately 240 fourth graders who do not have one at home. Now in its second year, TechCycle.org was conceived by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Anthony Mazzullo in conjunction with Garry Feldman of U.S. Computer Connection and Jack Condlin of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce. Businesses donate the computers, which are refurbished by students from the Academy of Information Technology and Wright Vocational Technical School. The equipment is distributed to families during training sessions that are held throughout the year.
In naming TechCycle.org as Connecticut’s outstanding program, Civic Star judges found evidence that the program has a definitive impact on students’ success, without any cost to taxpayers.
The Stamford Public Schools will be honored on February 22, 2003 at a ceremony in New Orleans, where the national winner will also be named.
